WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, NIGHTMARES ARRIVE
WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, NIGHTMARES ARRIVE
This painting is strongly inspired by“El sueño de la razón produce monstruos” (the sleep of reason produces monsters). However, they explore two very different themes.
In Goya’s painting there is a strong illuministic imprint, in such a way that the sleep, and consequently the sleep of reason, generates monsters.
In the author’s painting instead wants to talk about psychiatric disorders. In particular the Dissociative Identity Disorder and Fragmentation of Identity (from which the author suffers).
The painting itself seems pretty clear: A man alone in the night doing nothing and 4 people in the back that seem to pursue him. They are in fact.
If we look closer we can see that strangely the black men seem to be shadows of the protagonist.
A Shadow has been chosen to represent this type of pursuit because it means nothing how far you go, the shadow will always follow you.
Another interesting aspect is that all the figures in the back are similar to the protagonist but are all different.
And so the man, that did nothing wrong to arrive in this situation, is obliged to run away, run away from something that will always follow him.
